A Marxist Answers Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady"
Dissecting Meryl Streep's Golden Globe Speech.

On January 8th, 2017 at the yearly gathering of the Golden Globe awards, one of several such gatherings where rich liberals congregate to glorify and congratulate each other, actress Meryl Streep took some stage time during her acceptance speech to bravely speak truth to power. She spoke boldly to the room, filled with people who would generally agree with her, against the evil regime taking over what had, up until just now, somehow been a wonderland of equality and opportunity.

"You and all of us in this room, really, belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now. Think about it. Hollywood, foreigners, and the press. But who are we? And, you know, what is Hollywood anyway? It's just a bunch of people from other places."

She said this eloquently, drawing attention to the plight of America's truly oppressed demographic, Hollywood actors, and what are Hollywood actors really but former poor people and foreigners?  As long as you totally ignore all the money and privilege and fame, they are totally just like us! She then proceeded to call out a few actors with usefully humble or foreign origins and wittily asked where their birth certificates were.

"Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. If you kick 'em all out, you'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts,"
she declared. Apparently the martial arts aren't actually arts to our esteemed and refined actress, and football is rightly only for uncouth plebs.

She then quite rightly called out the villainous Trump for his horrific ableist mockery of a reporter during his campaign and continued,

"And this instinct to humiliate, when it's modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody's life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing."

I can only wonder how much room the woman who very positively portrayed the right wing monster Margeret Thatcher has to speak about providing evil with a platform and modeling such behavior as it filters down. Was she not worried that her glowing portrayal of a horrible person might filter down to viewers when she agreed to do the part? Would she care after she collected her hefty paycheck? For some reason, I think not.

"Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose,"  she continued.  This is the moment we hit dramatic heights of liberalism in a speech oozing with it.  Here's the reality. You have no obligation to respect the vile. You will not achieve progress playing nice with evil.  Violence has the power to end violence, and it has done so many times. When the people are powerful and they "bully" their former oppressors, the people win!

"This brings me to the press. We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call them on the carpet for every outrage." A nice sentiment, but it won't happen. The press in any nation reflects and reaffirms the interests of the ruling class. In the United States, that is the capitalist moguls running the show. The press will always be shaped by the forces of capitalism that force them to print what is most advantageous to their job security.

"That's why our founders enshrined the press and its freedoms in our constitution." She makes reference to the founders who made sure that the press would be of good use during their election campaigns. This way they could slander and mud sling their opponents unopposed.

So, the white liberal woman worth over $45 million wrapped up her brief preaching to the choir of the oppressed peoples of Hollywood by mentioning what a privilege and responsibility her fame is. She did give a nice shout out to the late mental health advocate Carrie Fisher even though she totally ignored Fisher's activism only referring to her as "Princess Leia."

Naturally this is all being trotted out in the press and across Facebook as a powerful speech where a great actress bravely thrashed Trump and got the conservatives all riled up! This will only be the case for a few days. After the passage of just a couple of days, everyone will forget what she said, and nothing will change.

  1. When I think of Meryl's activism, I recall a young mother publicly fretting about the pesticides on her daughters' apples ... Decades later the actress wanted a woman President so badly that Clinton's global crusade for Monsanto, the most despised poison manufacturer in history, apparently didn't bother Streep.

    2. Do I have to agree with you and disagree with everyone that voted for Hilary Clinton? That sounds wrong.

  3. Ok, enough of this Poor Man's tirade! As a woman of color who voted for Jill Stein, I can safely say that liberalism is not the preview of the rich White folks! It is just that you supposedly reasonable conservatives try to ignore the rest of us most of the time! I heard no outcry when the United Nations called you and Ronald Reagan for their welfare and crime lies! When the MacDonald report was exposed as being a bunch of fake numbers drummed up by the Cato Institute, you spent your time praising the Black woman who forged the work by saying " It took Guts for her to speak up" Then you vilified the Black woman who exposed her! There is a bit of hipocracy in your tone when your toes are stepped on by one of you own, and a White Woman of privelege to boot! Oh the Humanity! That's ok, you hated the Abolotionist White women too! Dreaming of Serena Joy much?

  4. The problem I believe is that you have liberalism mixed up. A Marxist is not a Liberal. Liberals are capitalists, and Marxists are Socialists. Socialists are also not liberals. You are assuming that a single economic system will always be supreme here that being Capitalism. When Capitalism fails, Socialism will takes its place. Until that happens, any party, no matter their name that functions within Capitalism, is Liberal.
